Centre men finish 5th, women 8th in cross country
The Centre College men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2007 season by participating in the Sewanee-University of the South Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 1, in Sewanee, Tenn. The men's team placed fifth, while the women came in eighth.
The men's team scored a total of 149 points to finish fifth overall out of 17 schools. Division I member, Mississippi State University, had five of the top seven finishers to win the meet with a team score of 18. Emory University finished second with 76 points followed by Bryan College in third with 98 points and Rhodes College in fourth with 108 points.
Sophomore Jason Parks (Louisville, Ky.) was the first Colonel across the finish line, placing 12th overall out of 161 total competitors. Parks finished with a time of 27:45 on the 8k course.
Junior Joey Polio (Owensboro, Ky.) placed 20th overall with a time of 28:14. Freshman Sam Morgan (Danville, Ky.) was third for the Colonels in 32nd place with a time of 28:52. Freshman Clinton Cahall (Georgetown, Ohio) and senior John Schuler (Prospect, Ky.) rounded out the top five for Centre in 52nd and 53rd places respectively. Cahall finished in 29:28, while Schuler ended with a time of 29:31.
The women's team finished with a team score of 246 to finish eighth out of 18 total schools. Like the men's side, Mississippi State won the women's meet placing four runners in the top 10. Emory finished second with 63 points. Birmingham Southern College was third with 116 points. Rhodes (124) and Tennessee Tech (138) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth places respectively.
Junior Emily Grandy (Bay Village, Ohio) led Centre, placing 32nd overall out of 149 competitors. Grandy finished the 5k race in 21:34. Freshman Regina Basconi (Johnson City, Tenn.) was second for the Colonels in 45th place with a time of 21:47.
Sophomore Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.), and freshmen Rose Myers (Cedar Key, Fla.) and Haley Gray (Lexington, Ind.) rounded out the top five for Centre. McCafferty was 129th with a time of 22:11. Myers placed 130th with a time of 22:42 and Gray was 126th with a time of 22:50.
Both the men's and women's teams will return home Saturday, Sept. 8 to host the Centre College Invitational. The women's meet will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the men's meet at 10:30 a.m. in Danville, Ky. |
