Cross Country News

The Centre College men's and women's cross country teams both placed in the top five for the second time this season, this time at the Wilmington College Fall Cross Country Classic, Friday, Oct. 12 in Wilmington, Ohio.

The men's team finished third overall out of 20 competing schools with a team score of 148. Shawnee State University won the team title ending with a score of 57. Otterbein College was second with a score of 73.

Senior Nate Blank (Frakes, Ky.) paced the Centre men placing eighth overall with a time of 25:52. Sophomore Jason Parks (Louisville, Ky.) was 28th, finishing with a time of 26:37.

Senior John Schuler (Prospect, Ky.) and freshman Clinton Cahall (Georgetown, Ohio) placed 35th and 36th with times of 26:55.62 and 26:56.88, while junior Joey Polio (Owensboro, Ky.) rounded out the top five with a time of 27:34.

Lindsey Wilson College's David Mutuse was the overall individual winner on the men's side. The freshman runner crossed the finish line in 25:11 to place first out of 215 total competitors.

The women's team earned their second highest finish of the season, placing fourth out of 22 schools with a score of 170. Otterbein won the team crown with a 58, followed by Franklin College in second with a 134 and Shawnee State with a score of 159.

The Colonels were led by freshman Regina Basconi (Johnson City, Tenn.) and sophomore Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.) Basconi finished 26th with a time of 20:20, while McCafferty ran a time of 20:25 to finish 28th.

Freshman Rachel Blank (Frakes, Ky.) also placed in the top 30 with a time of 20:31 to finish in 30th place. Senior Christanna Schuman (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Holly Overcash (Goshen, Ky.) rounded out the top five for Centre. Schuman was 39th with a 20:44 and Overcash was 47th with a 20:56.

Shawnee State's Lisa Davies was the meet's individual winner, finishing the 5k race in 18:41 to finish first out of 187 total competitors.

Both teams will look for continued success two weeks from now when they compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Saturday, Oct. 27 in Georgetown, Texas.
