Women's cross country third at Centre Invite

In its first meet of the 2006 season, the Centre College women's cross country team placed sixth overall at the Sewanee Invitational, hosted by Sewanee-The University of the South, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Colonels finished with a team score of 178, only five points behind the University of North Alabama (173). Division I member Mississippi State University was the top team out of 19 total teams with a score of 28. Emory University (2nd, 58 points), Rhodes College (3rd, 122 points) and Birmingham Southern College, which is in the process of moving to Division III from Division I (4th, 161 points) finished finished in the top five.

Senior Eileen Schilling (Louisville, Ky.) was the top Centre runner. Schilling completed the 5k race in 19:15 to place 10th overall out of 159 total runners. Freshman Ashley Gregory (New Albany, Ohio) finished 24th with a time of 20:27.

Senior Ines Kevric (Bowling Green, Ky.), junior Samantha Mahaffey (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.) round out the top five for the Colonels. Kevric was 48th overall with a time of 21:32. Mahaffey finished 54th with a time of 21:59 and McCafferty placed 60th with a time of 22:10.

Sophomore Michelle Corrigan from Mississippi State won the individual title with a time of 18:28. Along with finishing sixth as a team, Centre finished ahead of conference foes Sewanee (12th) and Oglethopre (18th), while finishing just behind Rhodes.

Centre will next host the Centre College Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Danville, Ky.
