Cross Country News

DANVILLE, Ky. — School is back in session and the Centre College men’s and women’s cross country teams are excited and looking forward to the beginning of another season.

The men’s team is striving for an unprecedented third straight South/Southeast Regional title (2005, 2006) and a fourth consecutive trip to NCAA Division III Cross Country Nationals (2004, 2005, 2006).

The Centre men return five of last year’s top seven runners, led by senior team captains Nate Blank (Frakes, Ky.) and John Schuler (Prospect, Ky.). Both Blank and Schuler have helped the men’s team to each of their three Nationals' births and hope to do so again in 2007.

Rounding out the top seven include all-conference and all-region runners Joey Polio (Owensboro, Ky.) and Chase Wilson (Paducah, Ky.), both juniors, sophomore Jason Parks, and two first-year runners, Clinton Cahall (Georgetown, Ohio) and Sam Morgan (Danville, Ky.).

Four other runners will also be vying for a top seven spot. Senior Josh Baughman (Louisville, Ky.), junior Farley Stephenson (Florence, Ky.) and sophomores Mark Carr (Louisville, Ky.) and Andy Williams (Nashville, Tenn.) will all compete to make the top seven. Expectations are high once again as the 2007 men’s team has as much talent, if not more, than last year’s team, as well as added depth.

The women’s team will be captained by two outstanding leaders, Jessica Droste (Louisville, Ky.) and Christanna Schuman (Louisville, Ky.). They will be counted on for experience and leadership on a young, but talented, team.

Sophomores Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.) and Holly Overcash (Goshen, Ky.), along with newcomers Emily Grandy (Bay Village, Ohio), and Andrea Heckman (Louisville, Ky.), both juniors, and Elizabeth Norris (Louisville, Ky.), a senior, will add depth and experience to the women’s team line up.

These upperclassmen will backed by four talented freshmen. Regina Basconi (Johnson City, Tenn.), Rachel Blank (Frakes, Ky.), Haley Gray (Lexington, Ind), and Rose Myers (Cedar Key, Fla.) will all be in competition for the top seven.

The women’s team, while young, is poised to out-perform last year’s conference and regional finishes as it seeks a birth at the NCAA Division III Nationals.

Both teams will test their early season fitness, when they travel to Sewanee, Tenn., Saturday, Sept. 1 for the Sewanee Invitational.
