Centre men 4th, women 6th at SCAC Championships
Following two weeks of preparation, the Centre College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2007 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships with the men's team placing fourth and the women's team sixth, Saturday, Oct. 27 in Georgetown, Texas.
The men's team finished with a team score of 89 to place fourth overall out of ten teams. Colorado College, which has the top three individual times,won the team crown with a team score of 37. DePauw University was second with a score of 63 and Rhodes College finished third with a score of 78.
Senior Nate Blank (Frakes, Ky.) and sophomore Jason Parks (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels by placing in the top 10. Blank ran a time of 26:21 to finish eighth, while Parks followed right behind in ninth with a time of 26:25. By finishing in the top 14, both Blank and Parks were named to the All-SCAC team.
Freshmen Sam Morgan (Danville, Ky.), Clinton Cahall (Georgetown, Ohio) and senior John Schuler (Prospect, Ky.) rounded out the top five for Centre. Morgan placed 20th with a time of 27:23. Cahall was 25th in 27:37 and Schuler ran a 27:44 to place 27th.
Colorado's Alex Nichols was the overall individual winner out of 87 total competitors finishing the 8k race with a time of 25:36.
The women's team had a team score of 183 to place sixth out of 10 teams. DePauw won the team title with a score of 29. Colorado was second with a 49, followed by Trinity University in third with a 59, Rhodes in fourth with a 103 and Southwestern University in fifth with a 157.
Sophomore Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.) was the first Colonel across the finish line, placing 35th overall with a time of 25:01. Freshman Regina Basconi (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 41st with a time of 25:18. Another freshman, Rachel Blank (Frakes, Ky.) placed 44th with a time of 25:24.
Seniors Christanna Schuman (Louisville, Ky.) and Elizabeth Norris (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out the top five for the Centre women. Schuman ran a 25:36 to place 48th, while Norris was 57th with a time of 25:54.
Trinity's Emily Loeffler took home the women's individual crown placing first out of 93 total runners with a time of 22:33 on the 5k course.
The Colonels will take a week off and prepare to compete in the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regionals, Saturday, Nov. 10, in Newport News, Va. |
