The Centre College field hockey team opened its 2007 season just like it did in 2006, with a win over Oberlin Colllege. The Colonels came away with a dominating 6-0 win against the Yeowomen Saturday, Sept. 1 in Danville, Ky.
Centre has now opened the last three seasons against Oberlin, winning the last two after dropping a 3-2 decision in 2005. Last year, in Oberlin, Ohio, the Colonels rallied for a 2-1 win on opening-day.
On a picturesque morning in Danville, the ladies wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) slid a rebound past Oberlin goal keeper Lauren Malinowski just three minutes into the game.
Minutes later, the Colonels added to their lead as Johnstone beat both an Oberlin defender and Malinowski again to score her second goal. In the final seconds of the first half, junior Emily Boyle (Louisville, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season with a blast from the top of the circle to put the Colonels ahead 3-0 at the half.
Centre continued its scoring barrage in the second half with Johnstone finalizing her hat-trick off an assist from Cynthia Morse (Louisville, Ky.) just seven minutes into the frame. Morse added another assist as senior Mollie Ronald (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the cage for her first goal of the year midway through the second half. Sophomore Victoria Richardson then capped the scoring when she scored the final goal of the day with a beautiful put-back off an Oberlin rebound with fourteen minutes remaining.
Assisted by an outstanding team effort in defense, senior goal keeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) saved all six Yeowomen shots on goal for her first shutout of the season. Oberlin falls to 1-1 on the year.
The Colonels, now 1-0, will follow-up their opening win with a match against the Scots from College of Wooster on Sunday, Sept. 2. Game time is 1:00pm in Danville, Ky.
