Guagliardo, Johnstone sweep SCAC field hockey honors again
For the second time this season, Centre College junior forward Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) and senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) have swept the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Field Hockey Player of the Week honors for matches played Monday, Oct. 22  through Sunday, Oct. 28.
Both players were named SCAC Players of the Week after week one of the season and closed the regular season with a sweep of SCAC awards as well.
Johnstone was named the SCAC's Offensive Player of the Week while Guagliardo was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Johnstone scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout over DePauw University on Saturday, to break a two-game losing skid for Centre and secure a No. 2 seed in the upcoming SCAC Championships.
 The goal came early in the second half on a penalty corner assist from sophomore Rachel Watkins (Louisville, Ky.). The goal was her ninth of the year and her third game-winner. She finished the regular season ranked second in the SCAC in points (24), goals (9), and assists (6).
Guagliardo posted her SCAC-leading fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over the Tigers on Saturday. Guagliardo turned away both shots on goal she faced including a tremendous lunging save in the waning seconds to give Centre its 12th win of the season.
Centre, which finished the regular season 12-3 overall and 6-2 in league action, will play DePauw in the first round of the SCAC Championships, Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 pm in Greencastle, Ind. |
