Five Centre field hockey players named all-region
After competing in its first NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships in school history, the Centre College field hockey team received more recognition putting five players on the 2007 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-Great Lakes Region Team.
Seniors Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) and Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) were each named to the first team, while junior Emily Boyle (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) earned second team honors.
Gray, who was named to the all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Team for the second time in her career, ranked in the top 10 in the conference in all point-earning categories and was second on the team in points with 24 (3rd in the SCAC). The senior midfielder not only led the Colonels in assists, but also led the conference and the region with 10. In addition to her role as a distributor, Gray has also scored six goals for the Colonels this season.
Guagliardo was named the SCAC's top defender as well as being named to the all-SCAC Team for the fourth time in her career. The senior goalkeeper is the first field hockey player in conference history to be named all-SCAC four times. As a leader in the defense, Guagliardo has helped the Colonels to a 0.88 goals against average (2nd in the SCAC) and has had a 0.841 save percentage to go along with her five shutouts (1st in the SCAC).
Johnstone was named one of the top offensive players in the SCAC and was also named to the all-conference team for the third straight year. The junior forward finished second in the conference in scoring after compiling 10 goals and six assists for 26 points. In only three years at Centre, Johnstone has become the all-time points leader in school history, totaling 57 points (22 goals, 13 assists) in her three-year career.
Faulkner, who was named to the all-SCAC Team for the first time, complied five goals and two assists. As a midfielder the sophomore used her endurance, footwork, and technique to help shutdown the attack of every opponent Centre faced this season. Her ability to play both ways was key in aiding the SCAC leading defensive efforts this season.
Boyle, a junior defender also played a big role in the Colonels' success on defense this season. The junior back tallied a goal for two points and added a defensive save this season in helping Centre post one of the best seasons defensively in school history. Boyle was also named to the all-region team last year.
The five selections are the most to an all-region team in school history and was more than any other school in the Great Lakes Region.
The Colonels finished with one of the most successful seasons in school history, tallying the most overall (13) wins and league wins (6) in SCAC history. Centre was also the first SCAC team to ever qualify for the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships. |
