Centre adds SCAC field hockey awards to successful season

The Centre College field hockey team continued its extraordinary season by winning numerous Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Awards, including co-Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year as voted on by the league's head coaches.

Junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) was named co-Offensive Player of the Year. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) was named the Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Tom Hobbs was named Coach of the Year. In addition to those awards, senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) were also named to the all-SCAC Team.

Johnstone was named one of the top offensive players in the SCAC and was also named to the all-conference team for the third straight year. The junior forward finished second in the conference in scoring after compiling 10 goals and six assists for 26 points. In only three years at Centre, Johnstone has become the all-time points leader in school history, totaling 57 points (22 goals, 13 assists) in her three-year career.

Guagliardo was named the league's top defender as well as being named to the all-SCAC Team for the fourth time in her career. The senior goalkeeper is the first field hockey player in conference history to be named all-SCAC four times. As a leader in the defense, Guagliardo has helped the Colonels to a 0.88 goals against average (2nd in the SCAC) and has had a 0.841 save percentage to go along with her five shutouts (1st in the SCAC).

Gray was named to the all-SCAC Team for the second time in her career. The senior midfielder ranked in the top 10 in all point-earning categories and was second on the team in points with 24 (3rd in the SCAC). Gray not only leads the Colonels in assists, but also leads the conference and the region with 10. In addition to her role as a distributor, Gray has also scored six goals for the Colonels this season.

Faulkner was named to the all-SCAC Team for the first time. Throughout the season Faulkner has complied five goals and two assists. As a midfielder the sophomore used her endurance, footwork, and technique to help shutdown the attack of every opponent Centre faced this season. Her ability to play both ways was key in aiding the SCAC leading defensive efforts this season.

Hobbs was named SCAC Coach of the Year in his third season as head coach of the Colonels after leading his team to a share of its first regular season conference championship in school history. Following two seasons away from Centre to pursue other interests, Hobbs returned this season to guide Centre to the most wins (13) in conference history and the first trip by any SCAC team to the NCAA Tournament. He also led the Colonels to a record-setting 10-match win streak to open the season.

The Colonels season will continue as they begin NCAA Division III Tournament play Wednesday, Nov. 7 against Lynchburg College. The first round match between Centre (13-4) and Lynchburg (18-4) is set to begin at 4 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
