Colonels rally for 2-1 win in field hockey
Trailing 1-0 with less than five minutes to play in the match, the Centre College field hockey team scored twice in a span of 2:20 to rally for a 2-1 road win over Bridgewater College Saturday, Sept. 8, in Bridgewater, Va.
With the win, the Colonels remain unbeaten at 3-0, while Bridgewater falls to 1-2 on the year. It is the first time field hockey became an official SCAC sport that Centre has started a season 3-0.
Following a scoreless first half, Bridgewater finally broke through when Christina Pybus found the back of the cage at the 50:38 mark to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Trailing by one and time running out, senior Mollie Ronald (Louisville, Ky.) knocked in a rebound at the 65:26 mark to tie the match at one apiece.
Less than two and a half minutes later, freshman Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.) scored the match-winning goal on a penalty stroke to help the Colonels remain unbeaten.
Centre out shot the Eagles 13-3 on the day while owning a 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Whitney Weigel (Louisville, Ky.) earned her first win of the season stopping one shot on the day.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Lexington, Va. to play Washington & Lee University. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. |
