Centre defeats DePauw 1-0 in field hockey Having not played since October 12, the Centre College field hockey team snapped a two-match losing skid defeating DePauw University 1-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Saturday, Oct. 27, in Greencastle, Ind. The Colonels, which defeated DePauw 3-0 earlier in the season in Danville, Ky., improve to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the SCAC, while the Tigers fall to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in league action. Following a scoreless first half, the Colonels scored the lone goal of the match only 4:10 into the second period as junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season for the game-winner. Sophomore Rachel Watkins (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist, her second of the year.
Centre out shot DePauw 6-3, while the Tigers held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners in the match dominated by defense. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) earned the shutout win making two saves on the day. The Colonels will next prepare to compete in the 2007 SCAC Field Hockey Tournament, Friday through Sunday, Nov. 2-4, in Sewanee, Tenn. |
