Centre continues to roll in field hockey with 3-0 win
Off to one of its best starts in school history, the Centre College field hockey team continued its torrid start defeating DePauw University 3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams, Saturday, Sept. 15, in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels remain unbeaten and improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, while DePauw falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Midway through the first period, senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) to give Centre a 1-0 lead. The assists was also Faulkner's first of the year.
The first half ended with that score and remained 1-0 in favor of the Colonels until the 43:34 mark in the second half. Junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0. Gray notched the assist, her fourth of the year.
Centre was not done. Less than five minutes later, sophomore Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) hit the back of the cage off an assist from Johnstone for the final 3-0 tally. The goal was Clodius' second of the year, while Johnstone recorded her second assist.
Centre out shot the Tigers 11-6 on the day, while DePauw held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) notched her third shutout of the year, stopping all five shots she faced.
The Colonels will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 16 when they host Lindenwood University. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
