DePauw upsets Centre 1-0 in semifinal field hockey match
After winning a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) regular season title, the second-seeded Centre College field hockey team was upset by third-seeded DePauw University 1-0 in a semifinal match of the SCAC Field Hockey Tournament, Saturday, Nov. 3, in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Colonels, which had previously beaten DePauw twice during the regular season, including a 1-0 win one week ago, falls to 12-4 overall, while DePauw improves to 11-8 overall.
Following a scoreless first half, which featured only four total shots - two by each team - the Tigers offense broke out in the second half tallying 11 shots to only two for Centre.
With 51:50 on the clock, DePauw's Beth Seegers scored an unassisted goal for the game-winner to help the Tigers advance to the championship match Sunday afternoon against Sewanee-University of the South.
While both teams posted five penalty corners each, DePauw finished the match with a 13-4 advantage in shots. Senior Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss for Centre. Guagliardo stopped five shots in the defeat.
The Colonels will conclude tournament play, Sunday, Nov. 4 in the consolation match against top seeded Rhodes College, who fell to Sewanee earlier in the day. The match is set to start at 11 a.m. CST in Sewanee, Tenn.
