Colonels bow out of NCAA Tournament in first round
Playing in its first ever NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships, the Centre College field hockey team was shutout 5-0 by Lynchburg College in a first round match, Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Lynchburg, Va.
The Colonels, which became the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) team to qualify for the tournament since field hockey was recognized as an official sport by the league in 2004, fall to 13-5 overall, while Lynchburg improves to 19-4 on the season and will advance to play Lebanon Valley College in the second round.
Caitlin Gibb opened the scoring for the Hornets in the first half hitting the back of the cage 17:22 into the mach. Less than three minutes later, Jessi Bowman added to the lead off an assist from Allie Weir to put Lynchburg ahead 2-0.
Weir then scored the next two goals, one at the 23:49 mark in the first half and the second 47:48 into the second frame, to put the Hornets ahead 4-0.
Katie Brennan capped the scoring with a goal off an assist from Weir for the final 5-0 tally. Sigmey Milks also added an assist on the day, but Weir was the story with two goals and two assists.
Lynchburg out shot the Colonels 28-9 on the day, while both teams had 14 penalty corners each. Senior Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss in goal for Centre. Guagliardo stopped eight shots in the defeat.
The Colonels end one of the most successful seasons in school history, tallying the most overall (13) wins and league wins (6) in SCAC history. |
