Rhodes defeats Centre 1-0 in double-overtime
After opening the season with 10 straight wins, the Centre College field hockey team has now dropped two of its last three matches following a 1-0 loss to Rhodes College in double-overtime, Sunday, Oct. 7, in Danville, Ky.
The loss was also the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) defeat for the Colonels this year as they fall to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in league play. With the win, Rhodes improves to 8-4 and 3-2 in the SCAC.
The two teams battled through a scoreless regulation with Centre out-shooting the Lynx 12-2. The Colonels had opportunities in regulation but were unable to convert as they also held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Following a scoreless first overtime, Rhodes' Erin Atmar scored the game-winner off an assist from Lindsey Gurkovich at the 91:17 mark in the second overtime period.
The Lynx ended the match being out shot 13-6 as well as trailing the Colonels 14-9 in penalty corners, but were able to come away with the conference victory. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss, making five saves on the day.
Centre will look to get back on track Saturday, Oct. 20, when it travels to Sewanee, Tenn. to play Sewanee-The University of the South. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
