Field hockey rallies, wins in strokes 3-2
Trailing by a goal late in the second half, the Centre College field hockey team rallied to tie the match in regulation and would later win 3-2 in strokes over Rhodes College in a conference match Saturday, Sept. 22 in Memphis, Tenn.
The Colonels remain unbeaten and improve to 7-0 overall on the year and 2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Rhodes falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Centre struck first when freshman Cynthia Morse (Louisville, Ky.) scored her second goal of the season to put the Colonels ahead 1-0 8:42 into the first period.
The half ended with that same score and remained that way until the 52:29 mark in the second half when Rhodes' Erin Atmar tied the match at one apiece with the first score of the match for the Lynx.
Less than three minutes later Rhodes went ahead as Charlie Wagner scored to put the Lynx ahead 2-1 with just over 15 minutes left to play.
Down 2-1 and time running out, Centre's Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) scored with only 2:55 left in the match to tie the score at two apiece. Regulation came to an end the two teams went to overtime.
The first overtime ended scoreless as did the second and the two teams went to strokes where Centre made three of its four attempts to only one for Rhodes as the Colonels remained undefeated with a 3-2 win in strokes.
Centre out shot the Lynx 28-22 on the day and held a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win for the Colonels making 14 saves in the win.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Sept. 23, with a match against Hendrix College. The SCAC contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. |
