Centre field hockey beats Rhodes 3-1 in consolation match

One day after being upset by DePauw University in a semifinal match in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament, the Centre College field hockey team rebounded to win the consolation match, defeating Rhodes College 3-1, Sunday, Nov. 4, in Sewanee, Tenn.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 13-4 overall, while Rhodes falls to 11-7 on the season. The two teams had split a pair of regular season matches earlier this year with Centre winning 3-2 in strokes in Memphis, Tenn. on September 22 and the Lynx winning 1-0 in double overtime in Danville, Ky.

Junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) opened the scoring hitting her 10th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Rachel Watkins (Louisville, Ky.) to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime, but changed only 1:30 into the second half when Watkins scored her seventh goal of the year off an assist from senior Mollie Ronald (Louisville, Ky.) to put Centre ahead 2-0.

The Lynx Morgan Jane Mischer pulled Rhodes within one at 2-1 at the 61:37 mark in the second period, only to see sophomore Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) hit the back of the cage just under five minutes later for the final 3-1 tally. Senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist on the score.

The Colonels out shot the Lynx 15-9 on the day and held a 17-15 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win for Centre stopping five shots on the day.

The Colonels 13 wins are the most by a Centre field hockey team since the sport was officially recognized by the SCAC. The season also marks the third straight winning record. Centre will now wait to see if it is chosen to play in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
