Field hockey team falls 3-2 to Sewanee
Playing for the second time this season, the Centre College field hockey team fell to Sewanee-University of the South 3-2 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match, Friday, Oct. 12 in Sewanee, Tenn.
With the loss, the Colonels have now lost three of their last four matches to fall to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC. Sewanee, which fell to Centre 2-1 in overtime back on September 29, improves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.
The Colonels struck first when sophomore Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her seventh goal of the year off an assist from junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) to put Centre ahead 1-0.
The Tigers answered less than three minutes later when Carly Grimm tied the match at one apiece with an unassisted goal only 5:13 into the first half.
Later in the first period, the Colonels went back ahead when senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) tallied her sixth goal of the season on a penalty corner to put Centre up 2-1.
The score remained that way into the second half. Just under 12 minutes into the second period Sewanee's Marcy Tickner scored an unassisted goal to tie the match at two.
Tickner struck again with 8:06 left in the match for her second goal of the day and the game winner as Sewanee went on to finish with a 3-2 win.
The match was evenly played as both teams tallied 15 shots each and also matched each other with 10 penalty corners apiece. Senior Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss in goal for the Colonels. Guagliardo made 11 saves in the defeat.
Centre will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 23, against Transylvania University. The non-conference match will start at 7 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
