Colonels move to 10-0 win overtime win against Sewanee
The Centre College field hockey team continued its winning streak with a 2-1 overtime victory over conference rival Sewanee-University of the South on Saturday, Sept. 29.
Senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) opened the scoring in the first-half with her third goal of the season on a penalty corner strike in the 28th minute of the first half. The score would remain 1-0 into the last three minutes of the match when the Colonels had a goal from junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) called back on a controversial call. The call was potentially game changing, as Sewanee quickly countered to score their only goal of the game with 45-seconds remaining in regulation to tie the match.
This was the second time in a week that Centre was pushed to overtime play in the SCAC. Unlike the previous weekend at Rhodes, where the Colonels won in penalty strokes, Centre scored only 6:00 minutes into the first overtime as sophomore Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) posted her third assist on the season with a beautiful back-door pass to Johnstone who scored the game winner.
With the win, the Colonels remain atop the SCAC standings (4-0) and push their overall record to a school-record 10-0 start. Centre outshot Sewanee 15-6, posted 10 penalty corners to Sewanee's 11, and senior goal keeper Ann Guagliardo recorded five saves in her seventh win of the season.
Centre continue's play at NCAA Division-II Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 6:00pm.
