The Centre College field hockey team continued its hot start to the 2007 season scoring two goals in the first period and another in the second half to defeat Washington and Lee University 3-1 on the road Sunday, Sept. 9 in Lexington, Va.

With the win, the Colonels move to 4-0 on the year for the first time during the SCAC era. Washington and Lee falls to 1-1.

Only 4:29 later, sophomore Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) added to the lead, with her first goal of the season to put Centre ahead 2-0. Senior Taylor Gray (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist on the score, her third of the year.

Washington and Lee got on the scoreboard in the second half when Christina Merchant scored at the 43:16 mark to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

Later in the period, the Colonels scored again as Johnstone found the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season to seal the win. Senior Ashley Distler (Louisville, Ky.) notched her first assist of the season.

The Generals out-shot Centre 21-11 on the day and held a 23-8 advantage but could only muster one goal. Senior Ann Guagliardo (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for the Colonels. Guagliardo made three saves on the day.

Centre will open its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) season, Saturday, Sept. 15, when it hosts DePauw University. The match is set to start at 11 a.m. in Danville, Ky.
