Field Hockey News

This week in field hockey.

The Centre College field hockey finished a grueling stretch of games this past week against NCAA D-II opponent Bellarmine University and SCAC rivals Hendrix College and Rhodes College. Centre dropped its first match of the season at Bellarmine 4-2 in an evenly played match, but the Knights execution on offensive penalty corners was the difference with all four of the scores coming from penalty corners. The Colonels bounced back against Hendrix winning 6-0 and posting their sixth shutout of the season. Sophmore roommates Mary Kate Clodius and Rachel Watkins recorded five of the Colonels six goals on the day, with senior Taylor Gray adding the other.

On Sunday, Centre hosted Rhodes College with senior day festivities occurring before the match. Seniors Ashley Distler, Sarah Douglas (statistician), Taylor Gray, Ann Guagliardo, Mollie Ronald, and Whitney Weigel were all recognized for their outstanding contributions to the field hockey program over the past four years. As for the match, the Colonels put forth a great effort against their rivals from Memphis outshooting them and earning more penalty corners. But despite these efforts, Centre was unable to put a goal in for the first time all season eventually dropping its first conference game in double overtime. The match was the Colonels seventh in only sixteen days.

As such, Centre will take Monday and Tuesday of this week off, as they recover physically and make a strong push to prepare for their academic responsibilities for mid-terms. Practices will resume on Wednesday as Centre prepares for another difficult SCAC road game against Sewanee-University of the South on Friday at 5:00pm Eastern. Centre defeated Sewanee earlier in the season 2-1 in overtime.

Thus far, Centre is 11-2 overall, 10-1 against NCAA D-III opponents, and 5-1 in SCAC play. Remaining matches include Centre at Sewanee, at Transylvania, and at DePauw. The SCAC Championships will be held at Sewanee from Nov. 2-4.
