The Centre College field hockey team is off to a great start in the 2007 season as they defeated in-region rivals Oberlin College (6-0) and The College of Wooster (2-0) this past weekend. Play was outstanding all over the pitch with staunch team defense in support of senior goal keeper Ann Guagliardo's (Louisville, Ky.) two shutouts and an offensive explosion unlike any other in recent years.
Junior Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) netted a hat-trick in the Colonels' opening game and senior Mollie Ronald (Louisville, Ky.) added two goals of her own over the weekend. Also scoring goals for Centre were Emily Boyle (Louisville, Ky.), Victoria Richardson (Webster, N.Y.), and Rachel Watkins (Louisville, Ky.). Senior Taylor Gray and freshman Cynthia Morse (both from Louisville, Ky.) posted two assists each with Ronald adding one as well.
Ashley Distler (Louisville, Ky.), Sarah Scheer (Louisville, Ky.), Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.) and Boyle anchored the Centre defense with incredible support from midfielder Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.). Faulkner played solidly in both games of the weekend making her presence felt everywhere except the scoresheet. Gray's performance was equally impactful in the midfield on both sides of the ball.
Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.), Brittany Coppola (Louisville, Ky.), Alison Pierce (Damariscotta, Me.), and Richardson played vital roles in the Colonels' success coming off the bench to provide quality minutes in both contests.
The Colonels will enjoy a day of rest on Monday, Sept. 3 and resume practice on Tuesday in preparation for the coming weekend's games in Virginia. They will play Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, Va.) on Sept. 8 at 1:00pm and Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Va.) on Sept. 9 at 1:00pm. In preparation for the game at Washington and Lee, which will be played on AstroTurf®, the Colonels will utilize Hazelrigg Gymnasium, an indoor training facility in Sutcliffe Hall.
