Centre won it's first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game against DePauw University (3-0) and followed it up with a non-conference win over Lindenwood University (5-1) this past weekend. Senior midfielded Taylor Gray scored her first goal of the season against DePauw on Saturday and then proceeded to hand out four assists the remainder of the weekend.
Also adding points: junior Teresa Johnstone added three more goals and an assist, sophomore Mary Kate Clodius scored twice and had one assist, sophomore Sally Faulkner tallied her first goal and assist, sophomore Rachel Watkins added her second goal of the season, and freshman Cynthia Morse contributed her third assist of the season.
The Colonel defense held strong again behind solid leadership and play from senior Ashley Distler, juniors Emily Boyle and Sarah Scheer, and freshman Sarah Humphries. Senior goal keepers Ann Guagliardo and Whitney Weigel saved eleven shots on the weekend. Centre's strong defensive effort was supplemented by outstanding midfield play from seniors Mollie Ronald and Gray, junior Alison Pierce, sophomores Faulkner and Victoria Richardson, and freshman Morse.
Centre is seeing contributions from freshman Brittany Coppola and sophomore Courtney Godsey as well. Coppola, who played only her freshman year in high school, has given quality minutes to the Colonels in each game she has appeared and continues to improve weekly. Godsey, a goal keeper, has also shown improvement in practice recently and could see some minutes in goal in the near future.
Junior Beth Faulkner, who tore her ACL in the first practice of pre-season, successfully emerged from surgery this week. She reappeared on the sideline for both games this weekend and was a huge inspiration to the Colonels. While she rehabilitates, Faulkner will continue helping the Colonels as an assistant coach. Please continue to support Beth with your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement as she begins her road back to pitch.
Thus far, the Colonels are 6-0 with a plus-18 goal differential - 21 goals scored versus only three (3) goals allowed. They will travel to Memphis, Tenn., on Friday, Sept. 21 for a much anticipated SCAC contest with defending conference champion Rhodes College. Both teams have seen major changes from last season, leaving the match up for grabs for these two rivals. Game time is Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12:00pm Eastern. On Sunday, Centre will play first-year program Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. Game time is 1:00pm Eastern. |
