Field Hockey News

This week in field hockey.

The Colonels won two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) games this past weekend against Rhodes College (3-2) and Hendrix College (3-0) to up their record to 3-0 in conference play and 8-0 overall.

Freshman Cynthia Morse started the scoring last weekend againt Rhodes with a beautiful strike in the 9th minute of play. The goal was Morse's second of the season and only a small reflection of her impact this weekend. Sophomore Sally Faulkner scored two important goals on the weekend including the game tying goal against Rhodes with less than three minutes to play in regulation to force overtime. Faulkner also played all 30 minutes of the seven-a-side overtime in Memphis and scored against Hendrix on Sunday to provide some breathing room for the Colonels.

Rachel Watkins, a sophomore forward, added her second and third goals of the season against Hendrix and combined with the play of fellow sophomore and room mate Mary Kate Clodius gave game-impacting performances in both games on the weekend.

Senior midfielder Taylor Gray added her SCAC-leading eighth assist this weekend. Backs Emily Boyle, Ashley Distler, Sarah Humphries, and Sarah Scheer played every minute of regulation in both matches and continue to pace the Colonels' efforts on attack and defense. Midfielders Alison Pierce, Victoria Richardson, and Mollie Ronald played very well this past weekend for Centre as the Colonel's worked to improve their passing game out of the midfield. In addition to Clodius, and Watkins, Centre also received quality performances from forwards Brittany Coppola and Teresa Johnstone.

Senior goal keeper Ann Guagliardo won her fifth game of the season against Rhodes recording 14 saves, including three break away opportunities in overtime play and three penalty strokes in the shootout to secure the win for Centre. Whitney Weigel recorded her first shutout of the season against Hendrix for her third win of the season. And sophomore goal keeper Courtney Godsey was held out of play this weekend due to tightness in her back and neck.

Senior Beth Faulkner continues her recovery after ACL surgery and is already making an impact on the coaching staff again as she made the trip to Memphis this past weekend.

Centre will host Transylvania University on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 5:00pm and Sewanee-University of the South on Sept. 29 at 11:00am. Following the Sewanee game the Colonels will host their annual Parents' Weekend Cookout. All family and friends are invited to attend this pot-luck event!
