Centre field hockey wins season opener
Looking to build on an NCAA appearance last year, the Centre College field hockey team opened it's 2008 season on a high note with a 4-3 win against Oberlin College, Saturday, Aug. 30 in Oberlin, Ohio.
The Colonels jumped to an early lead with a goal from senior forward Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) at the 26:33 mark. Assisting Johnstone on the goal was junior forward/mid-fielder Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.). The Colonels then added another goal at the 6:03 mark when sophomore Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.) scored on a penalty shot. Oberlin responded with a goal of its own at the 3:49 mark only to give up another goal to Centre, this time by Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.), at the 2:03 mark. At the half the Colonels were up 3-1.
In the second half the Colonels saw their lead slip away as Oberlin tied the game at 3 all with ten minutes to play. Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.) scored what would serve as the winning goal at the 8:53 mark. Centre would go on to maintain the 4-3 lead and win its 2008 season opener.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday Aug. 31 against Wooster at 11:00 am.
