Field hockey wins home opener 2-1
The Centre College field hockey team won its home opener for the second straight year by beating Washington & Lee University, 2-1, on Saturday, Sept 6. The win moves the Colonels to 2-1 on the year.
Washington & Lee struck first scoring at the 27:30 mark of the first period. It took Centre all the way to the closing minutes of the first half to tie the score on a goal by senior forward Teresa Johnstone (Louisville, Ky.). It was Johnstone's third goal in as many games. Johnstone was assisted by senior Beth Faulker (Louisville, Ky.). The game went into halftime tied, 1-1.
The Colonels broke the tie early in the second half with a goal by junior middle fielder Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.). Sally was assisted on the goal by senior Sarah Scheer (Louisville, Ky.).
Centre out-shot Washington & Lee 15-5 and with the win moved to 2-1 on the year. Centre will return to action tomorrow, Sunday Sept. 7, against Fontbonne. The game time is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
