Field hockey downs Bellarmine for second time
For the second time this season, the Centre College field hockey team has defeated Bellarmine University by a 4-3 score, this time Thursday, Oct. 22 in Louisville, Ky.
The Colonels, which opened the season defeating Bellarmine 4-3 in their season-opening match, improves to 10-3 overall, while the Knights fall to 8-8 on the season.
Bellarmine's Emily West opened the scoring hitting the back of the cage seven minutes into the opening period to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead.
Freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) tied the match at one apiece off an assist from freshman Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) only 1:29 later.
At the 15:07 mark, Bellarmine went back in front with a goal from Samantha Biedron. West had the assist and the Knights led 2-1.
The Colonels scored the next three goals, one at the end of the first half and the other two in the second half, all from senior Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.). Senior Rachel Watkins (Chicago, Ill.) had an assist on Clodius' first goal, while Jessee assisted on her second score and senior Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist on the third goal.
Lauren Schmeing added a late goal for Bellarmine, but it would not be enough as the match ended 4-3 in favor of Centre.
Centre out-shot Bellarmine 14-11 on the night and held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for the Colonels. Cowley stopped six saves in the victory.
Next up for Centre is a home non-conference match against in-state rival Transylvania University Saturday, Oct. 24. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. |
