Colonels blank DePauw in SCAC field hockey opener
A second half goal was that was needed as the Centre College field hockey team defeated DePauw University 1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams, Friday, Sept. 11 in Greencastle, Ind.
With the win, the Colonels remain unbeaten at 3-0 and 1-0 in the SCAC, while DePauw falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Following a scoreless first half, Centre senior Rachel Watkins (Chicago, Ill.) hit the back of the cage at the 41:10 mark for the lone goal of the match. Freshman Jessica McLean (St. Louis, Mo.) had the assist.
Centre out-shot the Tigers 4-3 and held a 10-5 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) earned the shut-out win for the Colonels stopping all three shots she faced. Centre will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 13 for another SCAC match against Sewanee-the University of the South. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Sewanee, Tenn. |
