Centre wins 5-4 over Lindenwood in overtime
The Centre field hockey team won their second game of the season 5-4 in overtime against Lindenwood. Centre took an early lead when senior Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) scored with help from junior Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.) on Lindenwood Saturday, Sept. 5 in Danville, Ky.
Lindenwood would score the next three goals with two coming from Irene Taranhike and one from Lauren Cato. Centre wouldn't let the half get away from them when Humphries scored with seven minutes remaining.
Lindenwood opened the second half with a quick goal from Haley McCulloch, putting Lindenwood up 4-2. Centre then went on a run of their own with a goal first from Humphries five minutes into the second half. Senior Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) would tie the game in the 23rd minute on an assist from Humphries, which ended up sending the game into overtime.
Centre didn't take long to score in overtime with a goal four minutes in from freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) on as assist from junior Cynthia Morse (Louisville, Ky.). Parks has scored the winning goal in both overtime periods this season.
"Despite some difficulties, our ladies battled back for a good win today," Centre head coach Tom Hobbs said.
"Sydney White stepped up in the second-half to mark their best player and everyone else rallied to get us back in the game offensively. We can use this match as a learning experience in preparation for SCAC play beginning next weekend. We’re all still learning about our team at this point and we still have a lot of work to do," Hobbs finished.
The Colonels next match will take place on the road Saturday, Sept. 11 against DePauw University. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Greencastle, In.
