Colonels drop Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 in field hockey
In the first of three matches in four days against schools from Ohio, the Centre College field hockey team began its trip with a 3-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan University Thursday, Oct. 15 in Delaware, Ohio.
With the win, the Colonels have now won five straight matches to improve to 9-1 overall, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 7-8 on the year.
Senior Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the first goal of the match 3:39 into the opening half off an assist from freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) to give Centre a 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, senior Rachel Watkins (Chicago, Ill.) extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal off a rebound.
Clodius added her second goal of the match at the 30:45 mark, this time off an assist from freshman Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) to put Centre ahead 3-0.
Ohio Wesleyan scored a goal late in the second half, but that would be all as Centre finished with an 11-10 edge in total shots, while Ohio Wesleyan led in penalty corners 9-6. Sophomore Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) tallied one save in goal for the Colonels to earn the win.
Centre will next play Denison University Friday, Oct. 16 on day two of the trip. Start time is set for 4 p.m. in Granville, Ohio. |
