2009 Field Hockey Preview
The Centre College Field Hockey program finished the 2008 season with a 12-7 record. The 2009 team is hoping to fulfill what the 2008 team accomplished and more, after the 2008 team made it to the championship game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Hockey Tournament.
The 2009 season will see the return of nine players, including 2008 All-SCAC Team and Great Lakes Region Team members Sally Faulkner and Rachel Watkins. Goal keeper Patty Cowley, the reigning SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year, will also return for her sophomore campaign. Faulkner and Watkins will be joined by fellow senior Mary Kate Clodius who had a solid 2008 season.
Juniors Sarah Humphries and Cynthia Morse had superb contributions as sophomores and will be counted on to play even larger roles in 2009 alongside Cowley, Jennifer Bohnert, Katy Meyer, Leah Oberst, and Liz Ratliff. Oberst will participate in her first season with the Colonels after a preseason injury ended her season prematurely last year. Ratliff transferred into Centre mid-year during 2008-2009. Centre will depend on a large first-year class to bolster the roster, as well. A talented and hungry class will have the opportunities to compete for starting time and be required to contribute from day one.
In the ever competitive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Centre will be challenged to repeat the successes of 2008. With the right attitude and effort they stand a great chance of winning a second SCAC Championship and returning to the NCAA Division III Championships.
The season opens on September 1st at home against Bellarmine University. Conference play begins on September 11 with the team traveling to Greencastle, IN to take on DePauw University. The team will have three conference games on the road and four conference games at home.
