Colonels fall 2-1 in overtime to Rhodes in field hockey
After playing to a tie through two regulation periods, the Centre College field hockey team fell in overtime losing 2-1 to Rhodes College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match Friday, Oct. 30 in Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC, while Rhodes improves to 11-4 and 7-1 in league action.
The Lynx Sarah Kennedy gave Rhodes an early lead with a goal two minutes into the opening period. Lindsey Gurkovich had the assist.
Centre freshman Jessica McLean (St. Louis, Mo.) tied the match at one apiece with a goal off an assist from freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) at the 15:05 mark in the first half.
The two teams battled through a scoreless second half and went to overtime tied 1-1. Six minutes into the match Charlie Wagner gave the Lynx the win with the game-winning goal. Gurkovich also had the assist on Rhodes' second goal.
Centre out-shot the Lynx 13-6, while Rhodes had an 11-9 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) suffered the loss in goal for the Colonels. Cowley made four saves on the night.
Centre will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 31 for another SCAC match against Hendrix College. The contest is set to start at 7 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
