Field hockey posts 3-0 shutout over Sewanee
After opening the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) season with a 1-0 win over DePauw University Friday, the Centre College field hockey team earned another shutout win defeating Sewanee-University of the South 3-0 Sunday, Sept. 13, in Sewanee, Tenn.
With the win the Colonels remain unbeaten at 4-0 and 2-0 in SCAC play, while Sewanee falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Junior Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.) opened the scoring for Centre hitting the back of the cage with only one minute left to play in the first period. Freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) notched the assist.
At the 56:21 mark in the second half, freshman Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) pushed the lead to 2-0 as Parks tallied her second assist of the match.
Freshman Anna Fuller (Cincinnati, Ohio) capped the scoring for Centre with a goal at the 61:25 mark off an assist from yet another freshman, Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.).
The Colonels out-shot Sewanee 17-9 on the day and held a 14-6 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) earned her second straight shutout victory stopping both shots she faced. Centre will next travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play Rhodes College Friday, Sept. 25. the match is set to start at 4:30 p.m. |
