Colonels pound Transylvania 8-1 in field hockey
By the time its opponent scored, the Centre College field hockey team had already tallied eight goals as the Colonels defeated in-state rival Transylvania 8-1 in a non-conference match Saturday, Oct. 3 in Lexington, Ky.
With the win, Centre improves to 6-1 overall, while the Pioneers remain winless at 0-6.
The Colonels scored three times in the first half as freshmen Anna Fuller (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) and senior Sally Faulkner (Louisville, Ky.) each tallied a goal in the opening period.
Freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) then scored two straight goals to open the second half and extend the lead to 5-0.
Another freshman Jessica McLean (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the teams sixth goal, and senior Mary Kate Clodius (St. Louis, Mo.) notched two more goals before Transylvania's Whitney Mitchell scored the Pioneer's lone goal of the match.
Parks added two assists. Faulkner and Jessee had one each as did senior Rachel Watkins (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Cynthia Morse (Louisville, Ky.)
Centre out-shot Transylvania 27-4 and held a 14-1 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Cece Lindsey (Louisville, Ky.) combined in goal for the win. Cowley stopped all three shots she faced.
Centre will step back into confence play Saturday, Oct. 10 with a home match against DePauw University. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
