Football blasts LaGrange 41-10

Scoring the most points in a game since 2004, the Centre College football team defeated LaGrange College 41-10 in a non-conference game, Saturday, Nov. 4, in LaGrange, Ga.

The Colonels, which scored 54 points in a 54-27 win over Kenyon College, Sept. 11, 2004, improve to 5-4 overall, while LaGrange ends its first season of football with an 0-10 record.

After going three and out on their first series, the Colonels broke through on their second possession. The offense went 76 yards on 10 plays capped off by senior Adam Blandford 's (Middletown, Ohio) 11-yard touchdown run to put Centre ahead 7-0 in the early going.

Later in the quarter, the Colonels struck again driving 55 yards on six plays with senior quarterback Kevin Phelps (Leitchfield, Ky.) finding the end zone from one yard out for his fourth rushing touchdown of the year.

The offense continued to move the ball in the second quarter. On first and 10 from the LaGrange 23-yard line, Blandford found the end zone again on a 23-yard run to give Centre a 21-0 lead with 7:37 left in the first half.

The Panthers added a field goal at the 5:40 mark to pull within 21-3, only to see the Colonels answer with a score of their own on the very next possession. Freshman Josh Ware (Chattanooga, Tenn.) returned the LaGrange kick-off 66 yards to the LaGrange 28. Four plays later, Blandford scored his third touchdown of the first half to give the Colonels a 28-3 lead going into the break.

LaGrange opened the second half moving the ball all the way to the Centre 15-yard line, but on fourth and four, a Panthers pass attempt fell incomplete and the Colonels took over deep in their own territory.

Phelps then led the offense down the field going 85 yards in 4:44, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Adam Clark (Frankfort, Ky.), his first touchdown reception of the season.

Junior linebacker Matt Johnson (Ashland, Ky.) later returned an interception 38-yards for his first career touchdown to put the Colonels ahead 41-3 before Centre allowed a fourth-quarter touchdown to the Panthers for the final 41-10 tally.

The Colonels offense managed 346 total offensive yards on the day, including 226 of those on the ground. Blandford recorded his fourth 100+ rushing effort of the season and his second consecutive three touchdown performance.

The senior running back finished the day carrying the ball 17 times for 137 yards (8.1 avg.) to up his career rushing total to 2,101 yards to move into fourth place all-time in school history in career rushing yards.

Phelps completed seven of his 13 attempts for 112 yards and rushed for another 35 yards on eight carries (4.4 avg.), while Clark caught three passes for 66 receiving yards.

The defense forced five turnovers on the day, all interceptions, to extend its consecutive game streak with at least one turnover to 21 games. They also broke up 11 passes to go along with seven tackles for loss, including three sacks. Sophomore linebacker Adam Hay (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Colonels' defense with nine total tackles, including a sack and a pass break-up.

The win also marks head coach Andy Frye's 52 career-win at the helm of the Colonels program, moving him into a tie with Charles Moran for second on the Centre career-coaching list.

Centre will conclude its 2006 season Saturday, Nov. 11, when it travels to Sherman, Texas for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game against Austin College. Kick-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
