Trinity downs Centre 17-10 on Homecoming
Seventeen first half points were too much to overcome as the Centre College football team fell 17-10 to Trinity University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Saturday, Oct. 21, in Danville, Ky.
The loss came on the Colonels' Homecoming Weekend, and drops Centre to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC. Trinity improves to 6-1 overall and remains unbeaten in the conference at 3-0.
Following a three and out by the Colonels on their first possession of the game, Trinity took over at its own 35-yard line. On the Tigers' very first play from scrimmage, quarterback Blake Barmore ran the ball 54 yards to the Centre 11-yard line. One play later, running back Greg Bielski found the end zone to give Trinity an early 7-0 lead.
The score remained that way until late in the second quarter. After a Centre punt pinned the Tigers at their own 19-yard line, Trinity marched 81 yards on eight plays using only 1:58 off the clock.
Barmore and wide receiver Riley Curry connected for two big plays on the drive, one for 50 yards on third and 13 and the other for 22 yards to the Centre eight-yard line. The drive was capped off when Barmore found Zach Byars for an eight-yard touchdown pass on third and goal to give Trinity a 14-0 advantage with only 0:15 left in the half.
The score appeared to stay that way into halftime, but Centre senior quarterback Kevin Phelps (Leitchfield, Ky.) was intercepted on the first play of the drive, and the ball was returned to the Centre 20-yard line. The Tigers kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
Centre kicked off to Trinity to start the third quarter, but quickly got the ball back. With the Tigers on their own 22-yard line, Bielski took the handoff on the second play and fumbled. Junior linebacker Matt Johnson (Ashland, Ky.) recovered the ball at the Trinity 12-yard line after senior defensive end Brian Dougherty (Hopkinsville, Ky.) forced his first fumble of the season.
The Colonels' offense sputtered, only gaining eight yards to the Trinity four-yard line. Senior kicker Taylor Rockwell (Richmond, Va.) connected on a 21-yard field goal attempt to cut the lead to 17-3.
Later in the third quarter, Trinity took over at its own three-yard line. The Tigers then used 11 plays to drive 53 yards to the Centre 44-yard line. On the 12th play, Barmore was intercepted by senior defensive back Jeremy Ware (Corbin, Ky.) at the Centre eight-yard line halting the Tigers' drive.
Down by 14 points, Centre began its drive late in the third quarter deep in its own territory. The Colonels moved the ball to the 37-yard line and then on first and 10, senior running back Adam Blandford (Middletown, Ohio) took the ball 63 yards to the end zone for his first touchdown of the season.
On the very next possession, Trinity drove deep into Centre territory again. On second and four from the Centre 23-yard line, junior defensive back Tyler Moody (Cincinnati, Ohio) intercepted Barmore at the Colonels' two-yard line to once again halt a Trinity drive.
With 3:10 left in the game, the Centre offense attempted one last drive. The Colonels started at their own 21-yard line and then drove 45 yards to the Trinity 34-yard line. Phelps' fourth and 14 pass attempt fell incomplete and the game would end in Trinity's favor.
Trinity out gained the Colonels 338-299 in total offensive yards, including a 205-104 advantage in passing yards. Phelps finished the day 12 for 24 for 104 yards and an interception. Blandford recorded his second 100+ yard rushing game, posting 131 yards on 17 carries for a 7.7 average.
Ware helped lead a defense, which surrendered 20 or fewer points for the fifth time this season, with 10 tackles, including eight solo and two assisted.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Oct. 28 for its final home game of the season. The Colonels will square off against DePauw University at 1:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
