Johnson picks up SCAC weekly honor

Centre College junior linebacker Matt Johnson (Ashland, Ky.) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's (SCAC) Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week, for his efforts Saturday, Oct. 1 in a 14-0 win over Sewanee-University of the South.

Johnson, a 6-3, 208-pound defender posted a season-high 15 tackles, including five solo and 10 assists in the Colonels 14-0 shutout of Sewanee. He also added a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, broke up a pass and returned an interception 29 yards to the Tigers' one-yard line.

The junior linebacker helped limit Sewanee to only 196 yards of total offense, the second time this season the Colonels have held an opponent to under 200 total offensive yards for a game. The shutout was the first for Centre since the 2004 season, when it also shutout Sewanee in Danville, Ky.

Johnson currently leads the SCAC in tackles (54) and is averaging 10.8 stops per game. He led the league in tackles last season as a sophomore with 112 stops.

He becomes the second Centre football player to be named player-of-the-week in 2006. Junior defensive back Tyler Moody (Cincinnati, Ohio) was also named Defensive Player-of-the-Week earlier this season. Johnson was also recognized once last year as the Defensive Player-of-the Week.

The Colonels, 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC, will travel to Jackson, Miss. to play the Millsaps College Majors. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. CST.
