Colonels drop SCAC game 38-12 to Millsaps

One week after winning its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the season, the Centre College football team dropped its second league game, falling to Millsaps College 38-12, Saturday, Oct. 7, in Jackson, Miss.

The loss drops the Colonels overall record to 3-3 and its SCAC record to 1-2, while Millsaps improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

After Millsaps first dive stalled at the Centre 43-yard line, the Majors punted to the Centre eight-yard line. On the very next play, senior quarterback Kevin Phelps (Leitchfield, Ky.) was intercepted by Millsaps' Kirk Jackson, who returned it for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the Majors led 6-0.

Millsaps' next possession also ended with a touchdown. The Majors took over on their own 20-yard line and drove 80 yards on nine plays using 2:34 off the clock. The drive was capped off by a Juan Joseph to Kennedy Griffin four-yard touchdown connection to put Millsaps ahead 13-0.

Centre answered on its next drive. Freshman kick returner Zack Sloan (Lebanon, Ind.) returned the ensuing kick-off 49 yards to the Millsaps 47-yard line. The Colonels then drove to the one-yard line before senior running back Jordan Tinnell (Louisville, Ky.) plunged in for his fourth touchdown run of the season. The extra point was blocked and the Colonels trailed by seven.

The half ended with Millsaps ahead 13-6, but the score would not stay that way for long. On the Major's first drive of the second half Millsaps drove 69 yards on seven plays capped off by an Eric McCarty 20-yard touchdown reception. Again, the extra point failed and the score would move to 19-6.

Two drives later, Joseph found Chris Jackson for a 71-yard touchdown pass. For the third time, the extra point attempt failed and the lead would be extended to 25-6.

Later in the third quarter, the Colonels attempted a 32-yard field goal, but missed wide right. Millsaps punted on its next drive, but forced a Phelps fumble and recovered the ball in the end zone for another score. The Majors attempted a two-point conversion and that failed as well and the lead would move to 31-6.

Following the ensuing kick-off, Phelps connected with sophomore wide receiver Chris Zimmerman (Oxford, Ohio) on the first play of the drive, but Zimmerman fumbled the ball and Millsaps took over in Centre territory once again.

The Majors scored once again to push the lead to 38-6, before a late touchdown run by Phelps finished the scoring for both teams.

Millsaps which entered the game ranking in the top 20 nationally in total offense and scoring offense, tallied 432 total offensive yards, including 314 passing yards by Joseph. Centre gained 350 yards of offense, but committed five turnovers in the loss.

Phelps finished the day 14 of 23 for 128 yards and an interception. He also gained 93 yards on the ground on 20 carries for a 4.7 average. Senior running back Adam Blandford (Middletown, Ohio) rushed for 77 yards on 14 carries for a 5.5 average.

Senior wide receiver Adam Clark (Frankfort, Ky.), playing in only his second game of the season, caught five passes for 47 yards, including a long of 23 yards.

Centre will take a week off and look to get back on track, Saturday, Oct. 21, when it hosts Trinity University. The game will take place on Centre's Homecoming weekend and will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
