Washington & Lee downs Centre 24-15

Following two road games, the Centre College football team returned home to play Washington and Lee University, but fell 24-15 to the Generals, Saturday, Sept. 23, in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which opened the season with two straight wins have now dropped their last two games to fall to 2-2 on the year. With the win, Washington and Lee has now won two straight and improve to 2-1 overall.

The Generals got off to a quick start scoring on its first two drives of the game. W&L quarterback Hunter Dawkins found D.J. Hackett for a 35-yard scoring strike on its first drive, followed by a Stuart Sitterson one-yard plunge on its second drive for an early 14-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Centre broke through on the scoreboard. The Colonels drove 61 yards on seven plays, capped off by a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Kevin Phelps (Leitchfield, Ky.) to freshman wide receiver Justin Jones (Louisville, Ky.).

W&L would add a 31-yard field goal just before the half and the Colonels would trail at the intermission 17-7.

The score would remain 17-7 until early in the fourth quarter. On third and 14 from its own 37-yard line, Dawkins found Jack Martin for a 63-yard touchdown pass to put the Generals ahead 24-7.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the rain came and made footing for both teams extremely difficult. With 3:50 left to play and W&L deep in its own territory, Dawkins took the ball on fourth and 11 and took the safety instead of attempting a punt.

The Colonels would take the ensuing kick-off and drive 56 yards on 10 plays in 2:28. On third and goal from the five-yard line, Phelps found his way into the end zone to pull Centre within nine points at 24-15. The Colonels attempted the two-point conversion, but failed and were then unable to recover the on-side kick attempt.

The Generals controlled the clock owning a 35:34-24:26 advantage in time of possession. With that time of possession advantage, W&L was able to out gain Centre 329-268 in total offensive yards.

Phelps finished the day 25-41 for 217 yards, including a touchdown and an interception. Senior Adam Blandford (Middletown, Ohio) rushed for 39 yards on eight carries, and Jones led the receivers with 66 yards on eight catches, including a touchdown grab.

Dawkins led the Generals completing 14 of his 24 pass attempts for 246 yards, with two touchdown passes and one interception. Running back Tom Pacicco led all rushers with 60 yards on nine carries and Sitterson caught eight passes for 81 yards.

At halftime, the new press box at Farris Stadium was dedicated and named after Centre alum Herb McGuire. McGuire was a stand-out athlete in three different sports at Centre including football, track and golf. The 2003 Centre Hall of Fame Inductee and 1955 graduate also coached numerous sports at Centre.

Centre will return to action, Saturday, Sept. 30 when they jump back into Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Colonels will square off against Sewanee-University of the South at 1:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
