Football's Hay and Sloan receive weekly honors

Centre College sophomore linebacker Adam Hay (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's (SCAC) Defensive Player-of-the-Week and freshman punt returner Zack Sloan (Lebanon, Ind.) was named to the D3football.com's team of the week following a 21-6 season-opening win over Bluffton University, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Danville, Ky.

Sloan didn’t waste any time proving what he was capable of doing. The freshman returner opened the 2006 season as the team’s punt returner and did not disappoint.

After a solid return of 15 yards in his first collegiate return, the freshman was even better on his last return attempt of the first half. With Centre ahead 7-0 and less than a minute remaining in the opening half of the season, Bluffton was forced to punt from its own 30-yard line. Sloan allowed the ball to bounce, then picked it up at the Centre 27-yard line and weaved his way in and out of Bluffton defenders 73 yards for a touchdown.

Sloan finished the day with six returns for 111 yards, including the 73-yard return, the longest punt return by a Centre player since Brian Britt’s 81-yard punt return against Earlham, September 9, 2000 in a 39-22 win.

Hay was a big part of the Centre defense’s success against Bluffton and for his efforts he was rewarded as the SCAC’s Defensive Player-of-the-Week. The 6-2, 194 pound defender from Cincinnati, Ohio recorded a career and game-high 14 tackles, including eight solo and six assists.

The sophomore also registered his first sack of the season in helping the Colonels allow only 148 total offensive yards for the game. As a freshman, Hay started every game for Centre and finished third on the team in tackles with 53.0, including 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and three interceptions.

The last Centre player to be named to the Team-of-the-Week was former wide receiver David Crowley following a 41-26 loss to DePauw University, October 30, 2004. Two Colonel defenders, senior Brian Dougherty and junior Matt Johnson, were named SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in 2005.

Centre will look to build on its early season success, Saturday, Sept. 9, when it travels to Maryville, Tenn. to play the Maryville College Fighting Scots. Kick-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
