Centre football honors its own at banquet
DANVILLE Ky.- The Centre College football team held its annual banquet on Saturday February 17 in the Cowan dining hall. With over 250 people in attendance head coach Andy Frye recognized this past season's award recipients.
Each team award is named in honor of a former Centre College football legend and are voted on by the team.
Homer Rice Special Teams MVP - Rice, one of the most successful football coaches to have played for Centre, was a quarterback at Centre during the 1950's and would go on to coaching fame as a high school coach in Kentucky and Tennessee. Rice would go on to coach at the University of Kentucky, University of Cincinnati, and in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals. This year's Homer Rice Special Team's MVP was awarded to Zack Sloan, a freshman from Lebanon, IN.
Bo McMillin Offensive MVP - Known best for his historical touchdown run that led Centre to victory over then undefeated Harvard in 1921, Bo McMillin's name will forever be associated with Centre College. McMillin is one of two Centre athletes inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, located in Canton, Ohio. Bo McMillin represents the athletic excellence that Centre College Football strives for each year; it is in his memory that senior Adam Blandford (Middletown, OH) was honored as this year's Bo McMillin Offensive MVP.
Teel Bruner Defensive MVP - This award is given to the player who had the greatest impact on the success of the team's defense during the season. Teel Bruner, along with Bo McMillin, is one of two College Football Hall of Fame inductees. Bruner, a defensive back who graduated from Centre in 1986 was a first team All-American in 1984 and 1985. Also a magna cum laude graduate and current doctor, Bruner, was named an Academic All-American during the 84' and 85 seasons as well. Dougherty of Hopkinsville, KY.
Charlie Moran Most Improved Player - "Uncle" Charlie Moran, coached Centre from 1916-1923 and led the Colonels to national prominence as a football power. His career was highlighted with what has been voted as one of the greatest upsets in sports, the 1921 victory over Harvard, and a national championship in that same year. In honor of the athlete who shows the same great desire to progress towards excellence that Coach Moran exhibited the Most Improved Player award was given to Rob Winter, a senior offensive lineman from Edgewood, Ky.
Joe McDaniel Pursuit of Excellence - To "pursue excellence with a vengeance" is the motto of the Centre College football program. Joe McDaniel embodies this idea and no one could be more deserving of having this award named in their honor. He pursued excellence at Centre for over 20 years and in the process became the winningest coach in Centre football history. THe person who is recognized for this award embodies the virtue of excellence in attitude, leadership, performance, and a commitment to himself and to his teammates.
