Football team celebrates achievements at banquet
Following the 2007 season in which Centre finished fourth in the SCAC with a 6-4 record overall, 4-3 in conference play, the Colonels held their annual football banquet to recognize the players' individual achievements.
The awards presented at the banquet are named in honor of the greatest members of Centre football history and the winners of these awards are voted on by the team.
Senior Chad Riney (Prospect, Ky.) was awarded this year's Bo McMillin Offensive MVP. Riney was a team captain for the Colonels his senior year, has been a three year starter on the offensive line, and
was selected by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Football Team for his efforts both in the classroom and on the football field.
Junior Chris Zimmerman (Oxford, Oh.) was chosen this year's Homer Rice Special Teams' MVP. Zimmerman not only led the conference in punts (61) and average yards per punt (39.9), but also played receiver for the Colonels and finished third on the team in receptions.
A pair of Colonels shared the Charlie Moran Most Improved Player award for the 2007 season. Centre's most improved players were seniors Tyler Boron (Soddy Daisy, Tn.) and Justin Moore (Versailles, Ky.). Boron played all 10 games at linebacker and was fourth on the team in tackles (73) and interceptions (2). Moore, a wide receiver, led the team in receiving yards per game (50.8) and was tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns with three.
Senior Tyler Moody (Cincinnati, Oh.) was selected for a pair of awards, both the Teel Bruner Defensive MVP and the Joe McDaniel Pursuit of Excellence Award. Moody, a safety, led the secondary in tackles with 78 and also had three interceptions. Moody has been a mainstay in the Centre secondary as a four year starter and was also a team captain his senior year.
Along with the previously mentioned awards, the Colonels also recognized others for their achievements on and off the field. Centre celebrated their 14 SCAC All-Conference performers for the 2007 season and their 7 members of the Academic Honor Roll.
Now that the award winners for the 2007 season have been recognized, the Colonels look forward to the start of spring practice and prepare for the 2008 season. |
