Colonels down Tigers 28-16
The Centre College football team continued its winning ways defeating the Sewanee Tigers 28-16 in Sewanee, Tenn. The win improves the Colonels record to 3-2 on the year and 2-1 in the SCAC.
The Colonels put together an impressive offense showing today totaling 363 total offense yards and scoring a touchdown in each quarter. What makes this offensive showing so impressive is that the Colonels were being led by a freshmen quarterback after the loss of starting quarterback Grant Conliffe (Louisville, Ky.). Filling in for Conliffe was freshmen Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio).
On the day the Colonels recorded 124 yards on the ground most of them coming from freshmen quarterback Tyler Osterman. Osterman ran for 108 yards on top of completing 18-29 passes for 239 yards and two scores.
After a first quarter Tiger field goal the Colonels added a touchdown thanks to a 51 yard Osterman pass to senior wide-receiver Tyler Hinkel (Lexington, Ky.). Sewanee responded with a touchdown early in the second quarter to retake the lead, 10-7. During the final minute of the second half the Colonels scored another touchdown, this one on the ground by freshman running back Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.). The Colonels took a 14-10 lead into halftime.
After half the Colonels came of the gate firing and in only two minutes had scored another touchdown. This score came from a 27 yard Osterman pass to freshmen tight-end John Coomer (Somerset, Ky.). It was Osterman's second touchdown pass of the day. After another Tiger touchdown and failed extra-point the Colonels added another score for good measure. The final touchdown of the day came from a Ned McCaster (Spring Hill, Tenn.) 88 yard kickoff return.
The Colonel defense continued its turnover steak, now up to 36 games, with a fumble recovery. The defense was led today by junior linebacker Brain Sneed Hendersonville, Tenn.), junior safety Sean Swallen (Mason, Ohio), and junior cornerback Zack Sloan (Lebanon, Ind.). Sneed led all Colonels today with 10 total tackles, three of them being for a loss. Swallen had 8 tackles, one for a loss. Sloan continued to have success in the secondary by intercepting yet another pass giving him 4 on the year.
The Colonels came away with their second straight SCAC conference victory on the road. The Colonels return to action at home next Saturday, Oct. 11, against Millsaps College. Game time is schedule for 1:30.
