The Centre College football team moved to 6-0 on the season, which hasn't happened since 2001, as they were able to hold off Birmingham-Southern in a 14-13 win on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Birmingham, Ala.

Birmingham Southern received the kickoff to start the game, but the Panthers went three and out. Centre was able to get on the board on the ensuing drive when sophomore running back Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.) was able to run the ball in from three yards out. The Colonels went up 7-0 on the Panthers in the first quarter with 8:15 to go.

The Panthers would come back on the following drive and tack on seven points of their own. Birmingham Southern was able to produce 11 plays for 71 yards on their scoring drive.

On Centre's second drive of the game Pinque continued to push the ball up the field and would eventually pick up the Colonels second touchdown. Pinque rushed for 18 yards on the 15th play of the drive to put Centre up 14-7.

The Colonels would hold off the Panthers for the remainder of the half to go into halftime with the 14-7 lead.

Centre opened up the second half of play with the ball, hoping to accomplish what they did in the first half. On the Colonels second play of the second half senior quarterback Grant Conliffe (Louisville, Ky.) would throw an interception and the Panthers were able to return the ball 36 yards for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was missed and Centre would remain ahead 14-13.

The defense for both teams would dominate the rest of the game as neither team was able to score again.

Centre's defense was able to keep the turnover streak going as they intercepted two passes in the game, one in each half. The Centre defense has forced at least one turnover in 49 straight games. The turnover streak dates back to the 2004 season.

The Colonels outplayed the Panthers in offense as Centre picked up 352 total yards compared to Birmingham-Southern's 174 yards.

Centre picked up 165 rushing yards in the game. Pinque recorded 139 total rushing yards on 28 carries. Conliffe would record 187 passing yards for the Colonels. Senior Nick Edwards (Flemingsburg, Ky.) picked up 49 yards on five catches and junior Rob Pope (Atlanta, Ga.) gained 47 yards on five catches.

Sophomore Cooper McGuire (Danville, Ky.) led the Colonel defense with five and a half tackles, with two and a half of those being for a loss. Senior Tim Dougherty (Roswell, Ga.) had four and a half tackles and one interception.

Centre has a bye week before they take on Millsaps College on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Jackson, Miss. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
