Football News

The 2009 Centre College football team is looking to accomplish what the 2008 football team accomplished if not more. The 2008 squad finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 5-2 record in the SCAC, which was good enough for a second place tie in the SCAC. In the 2009 SCAC preseason coaches' poll the Colonels were picked to finish fourth.

Centre received 27 points in the preseason coaches' poll, which is returning nine starters on offense, including five all-conference performers, as well as sophomore Tayler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) the 2008 SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Six starters are returning on the defensive side, including five All-SCAC performers.

Millsaps College for the third time in a row was chosen to win the SCAC championship. The Majors are returning the Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year running back as well as SCAC Special Teams Player of the Year. Millsaps received 44 votes and 4 first place votes, finished last season with an overall record of 11-1 and 7-0 in the conference.

Trinity University was picked to finish second with 41 points and two first place votes (8-2, 5-2 SCAC) and DePauw University was picked to finish third with 39 points and one first place vote(8-2, 5-2 SCAC).

Following Centre in the polls was fifth place Austin College who finished last season 5-5 and 3-4 in the SCAC. Rhodes College came in sixth place (4-6, 2-5 SCAC) and Sewanee University rounded out the poll in seventh (2-8, 1-6 SCAC).

Birmingham-Southern, a Division-III provisional member, was not considered in the pre-season conference rankings.

Centre opens the 2009 football season on the road in Hanover, IN at Hanover College, Sept. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
