Colonels shutout Sewanee 20-0 to move to 5-0
The Centre College football team posted its first shutout since 2007 and moved to 5-0 for the first time since 2001 by defeating Sewanee-the University of the South 20-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Saturday, Oct. 3 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels not only improve to 5-0 overall, but also remain unbeaten in league play with a 3-0 record. Sewanee falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCAC. Centre began the 2001 season 6-0 on their way to a 9-1 overall record.
After forcing a three-and-out to open the game, the Colonels took over possession at their own 40-yard line and drove 60 yards to the Sewanee two-yard line. Centre failed to cross the goal line on fourth and two and turned the ball over to the Tigers. On the very next play Centre recorded its first safety of the day to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Colonels then received the kick and drove 45 yards with sophomore quarterback Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) finding senior receiver Nick Edwards (Flemingsburg, Ky.) from 24 yards out for the score. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful and Centre led 8-0.
The score remained that way until the third quarter. Senior quarterback Grant Conliffe (Louisville, Ky.), who replaced an injured Osterman earlier in the quarter, led the offense 68 yards on 14 plays hitting sophomore receiver Jordan Albright (Cincinnati, Ohio) for a 14-yard scoring strike to extend the lead to 18-0.
Centre added another safety in the fourth quarter for the final 20-0 score and its first shutout since a 27-0 win over Rhodes October 27, 2007. It also marks the third time in the last six games against Sewanee, a Centre defense has posted a shutout.
The Colonels out-gained the Tigers 474-107 in total offensive yards, including 303-94 advantage in passing yards and a 171-13 edge in rushing yards. Osterman finished 13 of 26 for 185 yards and a touchdown before leaving. Conliffe went 12 of 21 for 118 yards and another touchdown. Sophomore running back Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.) carried 26 times for 128 yards, while Edwards caught six passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
The 13 yard rushing allowed is the lowest since last year's game against Hanover when the Colonels allowed only 14 yards on the ground. The defense also intercepted a pass to extend its streak with at least one turnover to 48 consecutive games.
Sophomore defensive end Cooper McGuire (Danville, Ky.) and senior defensive lineman Graham Herron (Henderson, Ky.) led the defense with four tackles apiece. Both McGuire and Herron also tallied a sack in the win.
Centre will look to remain undefeated Saturday, Oct. 10 against Birmingham Southern College. The SCAC contest will start at 12 p.m. CST in Birmingham, Ala. but will not count toward conference standings as the Panthers are a NCAA Division III provisional member. |
