Centre suffers road loss to Trinity
In Centre's biggest game of the year, the Colonels would suffer a 27-17 loss to Trinity University in San Antonio, Tx. on Saturday, Nov. 7. If the Colonels had beaten Trinity they would have claimed a share of their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title since 2003 and would have earned the league's automatic berth into the Division III playoffs.
Trinity would score first in the game when they drove down the field on their opening drive to set up a field goal attempt, which put them ahead 3-0.
The Tigers would open the second quarter with a touchdown after three plays in the period to go up 10-0 on the Colonels. Trinity had started the drive in the first period and would end up going 99 yards in four plays.
Centre would score with 6:08 to go in the half on a four yard pass from senior quarterback Grant Conliffe (Louisville, Ky.) to sophomore John Coomer (Somerset, Ky.) to put the Colonels behind by only a field goal.
The Colonels would go into the half down by only three points with the score being 10-7.
Trinity would open up the second half with the ball. The Colonels were able to hold the Tigers on fourth and four and would take over on the Centre 19 yard line. Centre would then fumble the ball on second and 10.
The Tigers were able to go up 17-7 on the Colonels after recovering the fumble and driving nine yards on three plays.
Centre would then score on the ensuing drive with a field goal from 23 yards out by senior John Starks (Russellville, Ky.).
The Colonels would then tie the game at 17 a piece in the fourth quarter when Conliffe completed a pass to senior Nick Edwards (Flemingsburg, Ky.) for 97 yards.
Trinity would not be fazed as they would score on their next drive when Chris Baer would rush for 64 yards to put the Tigers up 24-17.
Trinity would end the game with a field goal as time expired to give them the 27-17 win.
The Centre offense would gain a total of 339 yards on the afternoon, as Trinity would pick up 382 total offensive yards. Centre rushed for 83 yards and recorded 256 yards in the passing game.
Sophomore Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.) rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries. Conliffe completed 18 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while Edwards picked up 145 yards on six receptions.
Centre's defense was led by senior Matt Mazzanti (Roswell, Ga.) and senior Sean Swallen (Mason, Ohio) who each recorded 14 tackles. Mazzanti had one tackle for a loss.
The Colonels finish the season with an overall record of 7-2 and a 4-2 record in the SCAC.
