PGA pros come to town for golf fund raiser

Freshmen Tyler Current (Louisville, Ky.) and Michael Janok (Louisville, Ky.) tied for third place and the Centre College men's golf team placed fourth out of 11 teams at the Transylvania University Fall Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14, in Lexington, Ky.

The Colonels finished with a team score of 640 (327-313), only eight strokes out of third place. Brescia University took home the team championship finishing with a score of 620 (315-305). Brescia was followed by Transylvania in second (328-296) and Washington & Lee University in third (328-304).

Current and Janok tied Brescia's Ty Whitler with a 154 to finish in a three-way tie for third place. Current shot a 78-76, while Janok ended with an 80-74. For their efforts, both Current and Janok were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior Derek Tingle (Louisville, Ky.) was the only other Colonels to finish in the top 20, tying for 16th overall. Tingle shot a 78-83 to tied three others for 16th place.

Others who competed in the Invitational for Centre included sophomores Tyler Griffith and Alex Zimmerman, who tied for 22nd place with 163's. Freshman Hunter Catron (Elizabethtown, Ky.) tied for 32nd with a 167. Freshman Chris Cowright (Owensboro, Ky.) was 44th with a 171 and junior Rus Whalen (Georgetown, Ky.) tied for 49th with a 174.

Washington & Lee's Nathaniel James was the overall individual winner, shooting a 150 (79-71) finish first out of 68 competitors.

Although Centre was second after the first day and dropped two spots on day two, the Colonels did defeat Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foes DePauw University (5th, 646) and Sewanee-University of the South (10th, 704).

"This result is bittersweet since we finished the first day in second place and relinquished the lead to finish fourth. The positives are that we finished ahead of two SCAC rivals and several very good teams from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) as well as placing two freshmen on the All-Tournament Team. The Bottom line is that we need more consistency from our returning players and several of outstanding freshmen to step forward," Centre director of golf, Brian Chafin said.

This was the final match of the fall for the Centre men, which will take some time off and then prepare for its spring season.

"We will take a break and see who works hard to get better before we begin our spring season in mid-March," Chafin added.
