Colonels win second straight in men's golf
After claiming the Transylvania University Fall Invite title two days earlier, the Centre College men's golf team returned home to win the Jim English - Centre College Invite at the Old Bridge Golf Course, Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels finished with a one-day score of 291 (+3) to edge Bellarmine University (295, +7) for the crown. Transylvania was third with a 298 (+10). Thomas More College finished fourth (302, +14), followed by St. Catharine Community College and Spalding University tied for fifth (315, +27) and Wilmington College (320, +32) in seventh.
Centre was led by senior Rus Whalen (Cynthiana, Ky.), and sophomore Chris Conkright (Owensboro, Ky.), who both finished in the top five overall. Both Whalen and Conkright shot a 71 (-1) on the par 72, 6,526-yard course to tie for fourth place.
Freshman Chris Morris (Maysville, Ky.) and senior Derek Tingle (Louisville, Ky.) placed in the top 20. Morris shot a 74 (+2) to finish tied for 14th, while Tingle came in one shot behind with a 75 (+3) to tie for 17th.
The Colonels also had five other golfers play well as individuals. Junior Alex Zimmerman (Corydon, Ind.) placed third overall with a 69 (-3). Sophomore Mike Janok (Louisville, Ky.) had a 71 (-1) to tie for fourth and freshman Jack Compton (Tampa, Fla.) finished with a 72 (E) to tie for eighth.
Freshman Lyndon Jones (Taswell, Ky.) and Adam Mallory (Louisville, Ky.) also finished in the top 20. Jones shot a 73 (+1) to tie for 10th place, while Mallory shot a 75 (+3) to tie for 17th place overall.
Transylvania's Greg Turcotte was the Invite's medalist, shooting a 67 (-5) to finish one shot ahead of Bellarmine's Kyle Leach (68, -4) and two shots ahead of Zimmerman.
Centre will look for continued success when it travels to Anderson, Ind. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16, to play in the Anderson University Invite at the Anderson Country Club.
