Golf team performs well over spring break
The Centre College men's golf team traveled south to play in two invitationals over spring break. First, the team competed in the Piedmont Spring Invitational March 17-18 where they finished third. Next they traveled to Jekyll Island on March 21-23 to compete against a field of national powerhouse NCAA Division III and NAIA teams; the team finished eighth out of 26 teams.
At the Piedmont Invite the team finished day one with a team score of 304 and were led by Derek Tingle who shot a 75. On day two the team dropped their average score to 300 and were again led by Tingle who shaved four strokes off his first day score to post a 71. The team total for the two day event was 604, while Tingle received All-Tournament honors.
At Jekyll Island the team was able to improve their total score each day with team totals of 309-301-300 for a three day total of 910. This score placed them in eighth, but they were just two strokes out of sixth. The team was led overall by Rus Whalen who had a three day total of
219 (77-69-73). For his efforts Whalen, along with teammate Derek Tingle (71-75-75), were named to the All-Tournament Team. Perennial Division III national champion Methodist University won the three day event with a team score of 871.
Due to the impressive performance during the spring break trip the team has earned national and regional recognition. Nationally the team is ranked 22 in NCAA Division III and seventh in the South Region. Individually freshman Chris Morris ( Maysville, KY) is ranked 31in the nation and tenth in the South Region.
The Colonels will next compete in the Emory University Invitational on April 7-8 at Stone Mountain Country Club.
